AI, or “Artificial Intelligence”, is a wide-ranging branch of computer science which is concerned with creating and maintaining smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. These machines are capable of weighing up their options and selecting whichever they deem to be more suitable in an almost instantaneous fashion.
Should I use Artificial Intelligence?
I can almost guarantee that most of you will already be utilising the benefits of AI in your day to day lives. Such examples include, but are not limited to, Siri and Alexa, email spam filters, the Netflix recommendation system etc.
So, how does this affect me?
The future of artificial intelligence is something that is hotly debated among scientists and the general public. Some people are optimistic about the benefits it can bring to society while others are concerned about the possible negative impacts. However, it is no doubt that whatever the case, AI will ultimately become a huge part of life for us all, whether we know it or not.
Does this mean I should be using a bespoke AI in my business’ software?
One of the greatest questions when it comes to integrating the latest technology trends into our own businesses is “Should I be doing this?”. The answer, as always, lies in what you want from AI.
While AI does offer huge benefits, we actually still have fairly limited knowledge of AI in general. As a result, the practical use of bespoke AI is often locked behind a large paywall. As I mentioned previously, the companies that most effectively and frequently make use of AI are huge mega-corporations like Netflix, Apple and Amazon.
If you are an SME, the financial package required to develop and maintain a bespoke AI software is often just too much where in actual fact, the truth is, it’s also not entirely necessary.
In fact, it is possible (and encouraged!) to use the more simple, widely accessible versions of AI. Things like spam filters, personal assistants (Like Siri, Alexa etc), sales and business forecasting are all services that can be integrated from a 3rd party at a relatively cheap price and can be embedded within your existing software.
Most of the time you will already be using AI in your day-to-day business life without even realising it! That’s not to say you can’t be utilising more of it though.
AI is revolutionary and will only become a more prominent feature in our lives as time goes on. Whether that’s with helping surgeries, economics, predicant the weather, or simply rising up and conquering the human race Terminator esque, it’s worth looking into AI and seeing how you can make the most of the technology.
